Millennium Media is paying for The Piper.
The genre specialist has come on board to produce the high-concept horror movie, described as a dark re-imagining of the Pied Piper tale, and is pitching the project to buyers at Berlin’s virtual European Film Market. Icelandic director Erlingur Thoroddsen, whose credits include Rift (2017), Child Eater (2016), and a segment of the 2016 horror anthology Patient Seven, will direct The Piper from his own script.
The film follows a young composer who is given the opportunity of a lifetime when she is tasked with finishing her late mentor’s concerto. But she soon discovers that playing the music summons deadly consequences, leading her to uncover the disturbing origins of the melody and the evil force it has awakened: the Pied Piper.
„We’re excited to bring the legend of the Pied Piper of Hamelin to life in a way that’s never been seen before,“ said Millennium Media president Jeffrey Greenstein. „Set in the rich world of orchestral music, this film will establish The Piper as a terrifying horror icon whose melody will send chills down audiences’ spines for ages to come.“
Bernard Kira and Les Weldon are producing The Piper, alongside Millennium Media’s Yariv Lerner, Jeffrey Greenstein, Jonathan Yunger, and Tanner Mobley. Executive Producers for Millennium Media are Avi Lerner, Boaz Davidson, and Trevor Short.
Millennium is best known for their action franchises, including The Expendables, the Gerard Butler Has Fallen series and The Hitman’s Bodyguard with Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson. The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, the sequel, was set for release last year but has been delayed because of cinema lockdowns worldwide. Millennium began pre-sales on Night Has Fallen, the next in the Has Fallen series, at AFM last year but has not yet set a start date for the project.
